About us

At the Hernandez Lab, we believe that the study and conservation of biodiversity is not just a scientific endeavor but a collective moral responsibility. Unfortunately, too often, conservation is seen primarily as a philanthropic effort, but we approach it as an essential commitment to the future of our communities.

Our team is international, made up of an incredible group of dedicated students, volunteers and collaborators who work with passion and purpose, and who generously share their time and expertise across one or more of our projects. Some of our members work remotely and some work on site in the beautiful Desert Botanical Garden, in the heart of the Sonoran Desert.

Our values

We approach science and conservation with integrity, ensuring that our research and outreach are conducted with honesty, transparency, and ethical responsibility. We strive for excellence, maintaining high standards in all aspects of our work. Our lab thrives on collaboration, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where we lift each other up to achieve shared goals. We embrace innovation, leveraging cutting-edge genomics and conservation strategies to address ecological challenges and push the boundaries of scientific discovery, while also promoting novel ideas in environmental conservation entrepreneurship. Through education and mentorship, we inspire and guide the next generation of scientists and conservationists. Above all, we uphold stewardship, taking an active role in the protection and preservation of plant biodiversity, ensuring a thriving future for the species and ecosystems we study.
